Grey Sister (Book of the Ancestor, #2)Grey Sister by Mark Lawrence

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Mark Lawrence is creating trouble for himself. He keeps delivering great book after great book and the expectations rise with each new release. That is for the future. Right now… he should be showered with all the praise (and book purchases) he deserves (and that’s quite a lot).

Red Sister ended with a bit of a cliffhanger and Grey Sister continues the scene. Although that situation gets resolved pretty quickly and we move away from the bloody night and fast forward into the future. In every academy/coming of age book, there has to be a privileged, conniving and hateful nemesis for the hero. Joeli plays that role splendidly and goads Nona to do a lot of stupid things. And Nona is our typical hero, running head first into these traps. While all of this innocent academy stuff is going on and you are enjoying the petty intrigues, the author decides to throw a gut wrenching twist and the entire ‘darkness’ of the world comes crashing down on the main characters. From then on you eyes practically dance across the pages till you reach the end and the clock tells you it is 3.30 am and you have to be at work in 4 hours!

Hence, if you are reading this book… please don’t make the same mistake as I did…
– Don’t start on weekdays or else you won’t be focusing on work
– Don’t read at night especially after the first 100 pages (i.e. if you are a normal human and need proper sleep to function)
– Don’t read on the day you have to travel or else you will be reading while walking too and will probably bump into a pole

Instead, start the book on a Sunday morning, read through the day and go off to sleep with the satisfaction of a day well spent.
